Quick answer: The $1 is a check that your card works. It isn't a charge. We cancel it straight away, and the pending $1 drops off your account when your bank releases it.
When you'll see the $1
We check a card when you add it to the Nomni Loyalty app, unless your bank checks it another way. When you pay a bill with a card, we also check it again if it hasn't been checked in the last 7 days. Apple Pay and Google Pay aren't checked this way.
On your banking app or statement it can show as Refundable Charge, for $1, marked as pending.
When you pay, you see it at most once a week for each card.
If the check fails, the payment doesn't go through. Try another card, or ask your bank why the card was declined.
What happens to the $1
Since 20 October 2026, the $1 is only a hold. We cancel it as soon as the check passes, so the money is never taken from your card.
The pending $1 disappears when your bank releases the hold. How long that takes depends on your bank.
Before 20 October 2026, the check when you paid a bill was a $1 charge followed by a $1 refund. If you see a $1 charge and a matching $1 refund from before then, the refund has already been made.
If the $1 is still there
Check whether it says pending. A pending amount hasn't been taken. Wait for your bank to release it.
If it's still pending after a week, ask your bank to release the hold. They can see that it was cancelled.
If it shows as a completed $1 charge dated 20 October 2026 or later, message us. Tell us the date, the venue, and the last 4 digits of the card. Please don't send your full card number.
